The 3D Vulva Teaching Model

Ignorance and confusion about the vulva and reproductive organs is a common issue with young people and adults with learning disabilities. This 3D silicon model of the vulva and reproductive organs has been developed to respond to a commonly expressed need by teachers, school nurses and health professionals for a resource that assists the teaching of human reproduction, contraception, sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy and childbirth to young people and adults with learning disabilities. It also facilitates teaching the use of tampons to girls who have learning disabilities and/or are wheelchair users.

The clarity of the information it provides also makes it an innovative resource for young people and adults of all abilities in schools, colleges, and youth advisory clinics and sexual health clinics. 

The model is an invaluable resource for all schools where there is a need:

• For visual aids to assist pupils who for a variety of reasons have difficulty with more formal teaching methods and the abstract concept of ‘inside’ 
• To support teaching about sexual health and anatomy
• To assist school nurses in responding to queries, confusion or anxieties about sexual and reproductive health matters.

In the clinic setting, the model is particularly valuable when offering a service to people who are uninformed or confused about their genitalia and reproductive organs and where there is a need to:

• Give instruction in the use of contraception
• Explain the mechanics of sexual activity
• Explain the potential impact of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) on reproductive organs
• Explain the changes that take place during pregnancy

The model clearly shows the external parts of the vulva, vagina opening, urethra, anus, labia and clitoris. The internal parts include vagina, bladder, uterus with fallopian tubes. You can fill the bladder with liquid to show where the urine comes out of the body and you can insert a tampon into the model to show where this fits. 

The model comes with a set of ‘Notes for Users’, a modesty cloth and an opaque case to store the model in.
